Mingalaba from Myanmar!
Recently we have started to do house calls at a monastery in Mandalay! We have already been conducting home visits at a monastery in Yangon for two years, but this is the first time for us to do the same in Mandalay.
There are many children with skin disorders at Mandalay Monastery, as well as in Yangon. Even though they are suffering from itching and pain, they are left untreated. Living communally in this situation has created a vicious cycle of transmission between the children.
To alleviate this situation and break the cycle, we have initiated monthly house calls to promote hygiene education and help children to grow up healthy and happy. The children we treat are those that live in the monastery and go to temple schools.
On our first visit, 35 children were examined. Many of the children had scalp infections caused by tinea capitis. The doctors prescribe medicine to the children and also how to keep their heads clean with the support of the monastery teachers.
Many of the skin conditions seen at the monasteries are closely related to the living environment and hygiene habits, and as such cannot be improved immediately after a single visit. Even if the conditions are treated successfully after a visit, without continued care they will reappear. It is not easy to change living conditions and hygiene habits, but we will do our best to make children’s smiles shine even more.
