[Myanmar] On-site Medical Activities in Shan State, Myanmar
up 2021.06.15

Hello, I’m Kato, a long-term volunteer nurse at Myanmar’s Wachet Charity Hospital.

The other day, I left Wachet to take part in surgeries at a hospital in Ywa Ngan in Shan State.
Across 8 days of medical activities, 4 each in April and May, there were a total of 312 outpatients and 72 surgeries.
All treatment (surgery, hospitalization, and medicine) is provided free of charge to all patients.

Ywa Ngan Hospital is a new hospital started by the monks who run Htee Saung Hospital, where we have been conducting our medical activities.
As well as Htee Saung, we are now providing medical services at Ywa Ngan as well.

Due to the fact that many public hospitals had ceased medical activities and the lack of information from rural areas due to internet restrictions, we wondered what kind of situation awaited us.
It took around 6 hours to drive from Wachet Village in Sagaing District.
The journey was difficult, with many winding mountain roads, but the scenery was beautiful.
We did not feel the shadow of political unrest and there was no particular danger during our journey.

April and May are the hottest months in Myanmar. The temperature in Wachet Village is vey hot, reaching nearly 40 degrees Celsius.
However, in Ywa Ngan it was very comfortable, even during the daytime and in the evening and morning it was quite cool.
Myanmar is 1.8 times the area of Japan and I could really feel the variance in climate across the regions.

We will continue to conduct medical activities at Ywa Ngan Hospital on a regular basis, making every effort to deliver medical care to as many people as possible.
