Mingalaba! (Hello!)
We interviewed Dr Kyawt Kay Khaing Soe, a Burmese doctor who works with Japan Heart at Wachet Charity Hospital in Myanmar.
Q. How long have you been working at Japan Heart?
A. It has been almost three years since I joined Japan Heart in October 2017. After graduating from university, I began working at Japan Heart.
Q. How did you learn about Japan Heart and why did you decide to work here?
A. After graduating from university, I wanted to work for an NGO. I already had one year of experience working at a public hospital during my medical training, so I wanted to work somewhere other than a public hospital.
I learned about Japan Heart on Facebook. I had heard that a family friend had an operation at a Japan Heart hospital and after hearing that story, I decided to join the organisation myself.
Q. What do you like about working at Japan Heart and what brings you the most joy of the job?
A. I have great respect for Dr Yoshioka. During my first surgical mission I developed respect for his surgical skill and his conduct in other situations which inspired me to do my best at Japan Heart.
Surgery often lasts until the middle of the night, but I don’t feel tired nor do I think it is difficult. I am delighted to gain a lot of experience taking part in so many surgeries.
Also, I wanted to understand Dr Yoshioka without the assistance of an interpreter, so I started to study Japanese. I am very happy when I can listen to Dr Yoshioka’s stories and attend surgeries with him.
Q. What are you doing now?
A. I am studying hard to improve the medical activities of Japan Heart. When I go to other hospitals, I am always thinking about what we can incorporate here at Japan Heart. I would like to share the knowledge and ideas I gained with the nurses during in-hospital study sessions.
Q. What is your future dream? What kind of doctor do you want to become?
A. Before working at Japan Heart, I wanted to become an obstetrician or a gynaecologist. However, during the course of my work at Japan Heart, I have encountered surgeons and internists that I respect and now I would like to become a physician. I am also very interested in psychiatry. There are many people today who have mental stress and I want to be able to reach out to those people. This is why I now want to study meditation and psychiatry too.
I would also like to work with various people in different environments, so I would like to go abroad for work in the future as well.
